The Great Barrier Reef

Picture
If we don't do something now, it's going to be to late.  In October of 1999 Professor Hoegh-Guldberg issued a dire warning about the future of the Great Barrier Reef.  Predictions about what the future will hold for the Reef include that increasing temperatures on Earth's surface will lead to common bleachings and mortality. Eventually, the Reef will be completely destroyed.  If the issue of global warming continues, so will the destruction of the Great Barrier Reef.  Global Warming is said to occur due to increasing amounts of carbon dioxide and chlorofluorocarbons in the atmosphere.  Scientists believe that by 2050, 95% of the Great Barrier Reef will be gone and in 20 years, major suffering will have occured and many of the Reefs will be gone.

Overfishing can lead to a species extinction.  This would/ could be a global effect.  Some other organisms that depend on those animals may also go extinct and it could ruin the food chain.  Everyone should be aware of how much they catch and they should be environmentally friendly!

Other ways the Reefs are being destroyed is through human pollution.  One way humans are polluting the Reefs is that runoff from farming and mining fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides and human derived sewage end up in rivers which leads to the oceans where it will destruct the reefs. Thousands of tons of nitrogen and phosphorous are dumped into the sea where it will destroy marine life.
